With so much free mint projects being brought forward into the mainstream partly thanks to Goblintown, it is hard to keep track of which will do well or not. More or less free mints esp. for good/solid projects? Thoughts?

A free mint project delivery has always been a great idea for less established players in the markets. The biggest downside though is it came as part of a "meta" cycle versus an actual recognition that it was a viable approach to launching a project. The nice thing about free mints is that it really puts the onus on the creators to turn it into something because they're wholly reliant on secondary royalties to generate revenue. So from that perspective it buys them some time without people yammering on about floor price because (while it still happens) it should be hard to complain about something you got for free. So the benefit is that the creator gets to prove themselves with their ideas and developing expectations without a major cloud hanging over their head of, "Oh I just raised $1 million, I better make sure I'm catering to the people that invested." My only concern is that it might fall by the wayside specifically because it's a current meta, so it'll be discarded as a fad versus being utilized for projects that would benefit from it. It may become one of those things that there's an expectation that there's a price associated with the project just so it doesn't get the free mint fad label on it which would be unfortunate because it definitely fulfills a need in the space.

As a trader, I don't mind the free mint meta for now. It's a low barrier to entry that is generally risk free (always mint these from a burner). These create equity for the project founder without having to promise the world to its holders. So it's oddly refreshing and liberating. This meta currently works will wallets of all sizes and will give newcomers quick exposure. It might not be positive (most of these don't go anywhere) but it's exposure nonetheless.

I think they are a great opportunity for people who are on low-budget but want to start exploring NFTs and web3 in general. But at the same time, precisely because of its popularity now, there are also many “scam” free nft projects are out there. So I think everyone should be extremely careful when they are minting a free mint project. Maybe one way to minimize the risk would be using a totally different wallet that is only for free mint projects to mint, and saving your beloved nfts and other assets in another safer wallet.
